Common benign causes of upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding are stomach ulcer, duodenum ulcer, Mallory-Weiss syndrome, oesophageal varices, etc. The commonest benign causes of lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding are diverticula and angiodysplasias.

The most usual cause of bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract due to malignancy is tumour rupture (usually a sizeable liver tumour).

In many cases, there is gastrointestinal bleeding of unknown aetiology, which might be life-threatening for patients; it is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates.

Gastrointestinal bleeding embolisation is a particularly safe and minimally invasive way of treating upper or lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding.

Hospitalisation is far shorter, as compared to that following a surgical procedure. At the Interbalkan Medical Centre,  Ioannis Dedes has been successfully performing gastrointestinal tract bleeding embolisation procedures for the last ten years.
